There were some last minute entries that made some changes in the final week of the Big Fish Contest. Trevor Haas of Mattawan took over second place in the walleye division. He was on Lake Michigan trolling for salmon in 95 feet of water when the walleye hit his spoon. That fish was 32 inches long and weighed 8 pounds, 4 ounces.
The Senior Angler of the Week also caught a walleye. Robert Squire, a 66-year-old resident of Fennville landed a 10-pound fish that measured 31 inches in length with a 17-inch girth. That first place entry was caught on a Rapala Shad Rap.
The Junior Angler of the Week is 14-year-old Matt Bloomberg of Schoolcraft. His 5-pound, 7-ounce largemouth bass was the fourth largest entered in the contest. Bloomberg caught his fish out on Sugarloaf Lake using a spinnerbait.
David Ritter of Lawton remains in third place in the brook trout category. He replaced his previous entry with a 11.5-inch brookie that he released back into Gates Drain.
One other fish entered in the final week of the Big Fish Contest was a northern pike big enough to put Kevin Olszak in third place. That fish was 39 inches long and took a Rapala for bait.
There were 169 fish entered in D&R Sports Center’s 2009 Big Fish Contest. Out of all those entries one name was drawn for the Grand Prize winner. In week 16 of the Big Fish Contest, 10-year-old Morgan Budzyn of Mattawan entered an 8.5-inch bluegill that she caught on a red worm out on Huzzy Lake. That entry wins Morgan the Grand Prize – a $200 gift card to D&R Sports Center. Congratulations Morgan!
